What we found extraordinary, however, was Gov. Mike Easley’s willingness to grab a shovel after 10 months of basically clamming up about the case.
Easley, after all, appointed Nifong to the Durham’s D.A.’s post in the aftermath of former D.A. Jim Hardin moving up to become a judge.
Even more extraordinary, Easley’s willingness to go after his prize appointee while the governor’s over 500 miles away in New York City, you know, that place with all of the strange accents.
Easley, who was speaking at New York University during a Jan. 22 seminar series, lit into Nifong when given the opportunity by a student questioner....
So Gov. Easley, this was not one of your shining moments. Hopefully your advisers have counseled you to allow the adults to handle it from here.
And if you have anything else to say on the subject, do us all a favor, and save it for your next book.
